After completing an electronics degree in Toronto, I started working in the recording industry, September 1976 at "The Little Mountain Sound Studios" in Vancouver. I worked as a technical assistant to John Vrtacic, while also working in the dubbing room and assisting on recording sessions. In the following years I was the engineer on many (G.G.R.P) jingles and assisted on various movie soundtracks with Roger Monk engineering.
In the evening hours I also started recording the early 'punk' / 'new wave', bands in Vancouver around 1977. These included Tim Ray A/V, Pointed Sticks, D.O.A., The Subhumans, Phil Smith/Corsage, Modernettes, Bob Coulter, Go Four 3 and UJ3RK5. Later, I also recorded the first albums by Brandon Wolf (Barney Bental), Spirit of the West and Gary Fjellgaard. Many people in the industry know me as Ron Obvious, this is from my early recording days. After assisting on the 1985 Loverboy album "Lovin' Every Minute Of It" on the newly installed SSL 4048 E in Studio B, I made the move to a full time technical future.
I left LMS in 1991 to design and build studios for Bryan Adams "The Warehouse Studio", Jim Vallance "Armoury Studios", k.d lang (private), Bob Rock (private), Colin James (private), Bob Buckley (private), and Mutt Lange (private). I have also completed the acoustic and technical design for a number of schools in British Columbia and Manitoba, Canada.
During my years in the industry I have amassed a great deal of technical knowledge in all aspects of the acoustical, electronic and recording areas of a modern studio environment. I was technical advisor on two publications written by Tim Crich; "Assistant Engineers Handbook" and "Recording Tips For Engineers".
For 2 years taught (part-time) the "technical course" for the "Recording Arts" program at the Ai Art Institute in Vancouver. Also for two years taught (part-time) 'Studio Design and Acoustics' at The Digital Arts School in Kelowna, B.C.
I retired from the recording industry as technical director of The Warehouse Studio in August 2003 and now own and operate, Dragonfly Mobile Recording. This is the fourth mobile studio that I have designed.
Now living on Vancouver Island, I have completed the updates to Summit Recording Solutions and now use this as the base for my recordings. I still have my complete mobile setup available.
